Steven Dickinson Performing His First Magic Show in 1981Hello, my name is Steven Dickinson.  In 1979, a friend gave me his magic kit. I was twelve years old when I got bit by the bug of performing magic tricks thanks to receiving this kit. There is nothing like seeing the wonder in a person's face as they try to figure out how you did a trick.

At the church I attended there was a missionary visiting, his name is Bob Hill. Mr Hill showed me my first coin trick.

Another influence was Tom McElroy, now an actor in Chicago, performed gospel magic and was the youth pastor at our church. I bought magic books and tricks from him. We had some good times performing too.

In 1981 I came across an old trunk full of magic at a rummage sale. It was the last day of the sale and the nice folks gave me the trunk for free. You can see the trunk behind me in the top picture.

A short while after receiving the trunk I put together my first magic show and performed it for the neighborhood kids. They loved it. Mrs Rymer was kind enough to take pictures and give me a copy of them. One of the pictures was a shot of my audience. In the photo was a boy holding his hand to his mouth in awe. That picture of the boy gave me the final shot in the arm to want to perform magic shows on a regular basis.

By the time I graduated from high school I was performing magic shows for a fee on a part-time basis. Since then, I've performed at birthday parties, trade shows, nursing homes and church events. At the time I was member of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians and Society of American Magicians.

Sometime in my twenties I got caught in working a full time job and ended my performing magic days. I held on to my magic tricks and books until I was 35 or so. I ended up selling them except for a few favorites.

Now at the age of 41, I am performing magic shows again. Thanks to Lou Lepore, a friend of mine, for helping me get back into the art of magic. I've added new tricks and fun routines. Another big help has been the folks at The Magic Cafe, an online community of magicians.

Have a wonderful day,

Steven Dickinson
